NEW DELHI – A Muslim vendor, who was mercilessly beaten up by some policemen on April 29, breathed his last in a hospital in Gujarat’s Vadodara on Sunday after battling for life for over a month.

Omelette vendor Mohammed Faizan was dragged through a PCR van after his shop was found open outside Vadodara railway station late into the night. Two policemen and a van driver have been booked for assaulting Faizan.

The victim got married only ten months ago.

“I took good care of my brother assuming that he will be treated well and recover. But nothing happened. His backbone was broken. He was not able to breathe normally; both of his kidneys and lungs were severely affected and stopped functioning. Now he is dead,” Mumtaz, Faizan’s brother, told reporters in Vadodara.

Mumtaz said that he wants justice and punishment for the erring policemen.

“They have murdered my brother. They came together to beat up my brother. Even off-duty policemen came to take part in the gruesome act. They all assaulted Faizan brutally,” he said.

While the erring policemen were booked under Indian Penal Code (IPC) Section 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), among others, Faizan has also been booked under Section 186 (voluntarily obstructing any public servant in the discharge of his public functions) and other sections. Mumtaz demanded that policemen be booked under Section 302 (murder) of the IPC.

“Unless these policemen are punished, we will continue our struggle,” he said.

The body of Faizan, originally from Bihar, has been taken to his native village for burial. His treatment for over a month was made possible with the help of some philanthropists. The Muslim Doctors Association also partly bore Faizan’s treatment cost.

Faizan’s death comes as another Muslim youth, 30-year-old Azharuddin, died last week after allegedly getting beaten up by some policemen in Ahmedabad. Azharuddin’s family alleged that he was brutally assaulted in police custody.

He is survived by his widow and a child.
