JEDDAH (UNA-OIC) – Reiterating that Kashmir is a disputed territory as per the relevant UN Security Council resolutions, the General Secretariat of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) termed the recent notification of ‘Jammu and Kashmir Grant of Domicile Certificate (Procedure) Rules 2020’ as “baseless, running counter to international law and UN Security Council resolution 122”.
The General Secretariat said it has been following with deep concern Indian government’s unilateral actions on the region. Ascribing India’s actions of August 5, 2019 and subsequent measures to an agenda to “alter the demographics of India-administered Jammu and Kashmir, and undermine the rights of the people in the region”, it reaffirmed the importance of complying with international law and UN Security Council resolutions.
Earlier, last month the Organization of Islamic Cooperation’s (OIC) human rights body rejected the new laws introduced by the Indian government in Jammu and Kashmir, calling it “illegal” and a “violation” of international laws.
The Muslim body had expressed its deep concern over the adoption of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization Order 2020.
According to Al Jazeera, residents of Kashmir, as also experts, fear that the Indian government’s moves will eventually alter the demographic status of the Muslim dominated territory.
The spokesperson of the OIC noted that the Kashmiris “have outrightly rejected the new law as unacceptable.”
The Doha-based channel had reported that the law allows those who have resided for 15 years in the region or studied for seven years and appeared in Class 10/12 examinations in educational institutions located in there are now eligible to become permanent residents.
Recalling the resolutions of the Islamic Summit and the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM) on Jammu and Kashmir, the General Secretariat reaffirmed its solidarity with the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
It also called on the international community to gear up its efforts to resolve the Jammu and Kashmir dispute in accordance with the relevant UN Security Council resolutions and as per the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.
