NEW DELHI – Thousands of people Wednesday assembled at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar and held a demonstration as a part of nationwide protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) that have been raging for more than a month now.

The protestors were carrying national flags and posters denouncing the new citizenship law. They said that they will continue the protests unless the law is revoked or at least tweaked to include the Muslim migrants. The protest demonstration was organized by the Alliance against CAA-NRC-NPR.

The law grants fast track citizenship to illegal immigrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan but excludes Muslim migrants. The protestors fear that the law will be used against the disenfranchisement of Muslims.

Several activists and students from Jamia Millia Islamia and AMU (Aligarh Muslim University) addressed the protest demonstration in this occasion. They said that the struggle is not just about CAA but also about the anti-Muslim and Anti-dalit agenda of the Modi government.

On this occasion, Jamia Millia Islamia student Amir Aziz who has become popular for his resistance poetry recited his new poem Sab Yaad Rakha Jayega’ amidst massive applause.

Ehtisham Hashmi, a lawyer and activist, slammed the BJP for their obsession with Pakistan. He said that Pakistan has become God for BJP and whenever they are in trouble they turn to that country for help.

Another Dalit activist said that they will not let the Modi government destroy the soul of the country. “This is a battle for protecting the soul of India, we will fight it together, ” he said.

The protest was attended by a sizable number of women protestors. They were enthusiastic and applauded every statement of the speakers. The speakers praised the women for leading the current wave of protests and “exposing this fascist regime before the world”.
