GONDA – Controversy surrounds the arrest of an Islamic bookseller by the Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) in Gonda district earlier this week.

The exact reasons for the arrest of the youth, named Irshad, remain unclear; whether it is related to the sale of Islamic books or some other cause.

Irshad’s bookstore Maktaba al-Madinah Kanzla-i-Iman in Gonda, specialises in Islamic literature. He was reportedly taken into custody during a raid conducted by the ATS on Sunday. The ATS team, in plain clothes, reportedly picked up Irshad from his shop in Rakaganj near Pande Bazar police station in the Nagar Kotwali area.

The news of Irshad’s detention stirred apprehension in the district. According to a report on the news portal amrit vichar.com, senior officials from the police department did not confirm the raid, stating they were unaware of the incident.

Irshad, also known as Shiro, has been operating his shop for the past year, selling Islamic books and related items. Eyewitnesses reported that four to five individuals in plain clothes suddenly appeared at the shop on Sunday evening and took Irshad away. The lack of clarity surrounding the reason for his detention has added to the confusion in the community.

Nagar Kotwal Rajesh Singh acknowledged the report of a youth being taken for investigation but could not specify which agency or team was involved. Another police official, Vineet Jaiswal, when questioned about the raid, stated that no security agency had reported the arrest to the local police.

The incident raises questions about the circumstances leading to Irshad’s detention and the nature of the charges against him. As the community awaits official information, concerns grow about the potential impact on religious freedom and the sale of religious literature in the region.
