Jaipur– Renowned Congress leader and author, Shashi Tharoor, accused the central government of eroding India’s democratic institutions, asserting that the nation is veering towards an “electoral dictatorship.” Tharoor made these remarks during a discussion on the book “Audacious Hope: How to Save a Democracy” by Indrajit Roy at the 17th Jaipur Literature Festival.

Tharoor took an indirect swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, expressing concern over a decade dominated by discussions around a single individual. Emphasizing the need for a shift from the prevailing “I”-centric leadership, he advocated for an alternative that listens to the people, understands their needs, and humbly addresses them.

Highlighting the current democratic crisis, Tharoor appealed to the youth to exercise their voting rights in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, asserting that their votes hold the key to shaping the nation’s future.

Responding to questions about the opposition’s struggle to unite against PM Modi, Tharoor urged voters to support the opposition alliance and promised answers after the polls. On the Trinamool Congress’s decision to go solo in West Bengal, he acknowledged the diverse political dynamics across states within the INDIA bloc.

Tharoor criticized the BJP government, claiming that the autonomy of institutions crucial for democracy’s smooth functioning is being systematically dismantled. He pointed to the exploitation of investigating agencies such as the Enforcement Directorate and the Central Bureau of Investigation for “shameful” vested interests.

As the country gears up for electoral battles, Tharoor stressed the significance of a united opposition and called for a leadership focused on the collective well-being of the people.
