NEW DELHI — The recently released National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report for the year 2022 has shed light on a concerning surge in communal riots across India, with Maharashtra taking the lead.

According to the report, Maharashtra witnessed a staggering 8,218 cases of riots in the year 2022, impacting the lives of 9,858 individuals. The situation is particularly alarming as it marks a substantial increase compared to previous years. Twenty-eight of these rioting cases were linked to communal and religious issues, 75 cases to political issues and 25 others to caste-related conflicts.

Bihar follows closely with 4,736 cases, while Uttar Pradesh recorded 4,478 cases of communal violence.

The report from NCRB, which functions under the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, highlights the role of religious hate speeches on social media platforms, contributing to the volatile atmosphere. Inflammatory statements have not only fueled tensions but have also resulted in the loss of lives and property. The report identifies the impact of political leaders making provocative statements, adding fuel to the already tense situation.

In Maharashtra, the cases were registered under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including Section 147, reflecting the severity of the communal tensions prevailing in the state. The divisive environment has not only disrupted peace and order but has also negatively impacted the coexistence of religious groups.

Communal clashes have led to a hostile environment, affecting the day-to-day lives of citizens. From post-Maharashtra communal violence against individuals of other religions to provocative statements and criticisms on social media, the NCRB report paints a grim picture of the communal landscape in the state.

The situation is not limited to Maharashtra alone, as Bihar and Uttar Pradesh have also witnessed a significant number of communal clashes. The report emphasises the urgent need for effective measures to curb the rising tide of communal violence and hate speech.

Authorities are expected to address the root causes of these tensions and take prompt action against those spreading hatred. The focus on promoting inter-community harmony and discouraging divisive narratives is crucial for restoring peace and ensuring the safety and well-being of all citizens.

As the nation confronts the challenge of communal tensions, the findings of the NCRB report serve as a stark reminder of the importance of fostering unity and tolerance for the collective progress of the country.
