NEW DELHI – The Ranchi Civil Court has issued non-bailable warrants against eight Muslim individuals in connection with violence and rioting that shook the Jharkhand capital of Ranchi on June 10, 2022.

The individuals named in the warrants include Muhammad Naqib, Majid Alam, Muhammad Saddam, Jamaluddin, Khalid Umar, Muhammad Bilal, and Muhammad Harif, reports reaching here said on Monday.

The violence resulted in widespread chaos and numerous casualties. Both police officials and protesters sustained injuries, and a Muslim protester lost his life. Authorities immediately suspended internet services in the capital and imposed Section 144 in some sensitive localities.

The affected areas where Section 144 was imposed include Lalpur, Lodh Bazar, Daily Market Hindpirhi, Jagannathpur,  Sukhdev Nagar, Pandara Oli, Chutia, Duranda, and Urgorah police station areas.

Muslim leaders in Ranchi are vehemently responding to the situation. Social activist Mohammad Abrar Raza expressed concern, stating that the police actions appear to intentionally target Muslims, leading to harassment.

An official from Anjuman Islamia, a prominent Muslim organisation in Ranchi, acknowledged the historical sensitivity of the area, emphasising that past riots have disproportionately affected the Muslim community. The spokesperson, requesting anonymity, lamented the recurring trend of targeting Muslims, describing it as an ongoing and painful issue.

The reaction and concerns, particularly from Muslim leaders, underscore the urgent need for a comprehensive and unbiased investigation into the disturbing events.
