KOLKATA — Two persons were mercilessly beaten by an enraged crowd on suspicion of cow theft in Turuk Meena village in the Jamalpur block of East Vardhaman district of West Bengal on Friday night.

The beatings were so severe that both the victims succumbed to their injuries in the Vardhaman Medical College Hospital on Saturday morning. Initially, the victims were moved to Memory Hospital but since their condition deteriorated they were transferred to Vardhaman Hospital.

The region has been grappling with a spate of cow theft incidents, prompting locals to file complaints with the Jamalpur police station. The incidents came to a head on Friday night when villagers apprehended five individuals attempting to break into a cattle house.

Local sources reveal a pattern of repeated cow thefts in the area, escalating concerns among the villagers. In the latest episode, the alleged culprits were apprehended at around 1.30 A.M. on Friday. An angry mob, driven by frustration and fear, chased the alleged thieves. While three of them managed to escape, two individuals were caught and subjected to severe beatings by the enraged residents.

The victims jumped into a pond in an attempt to evade the marauding mob. However, they were soon pulled out and brutally assaulted. The incident was reported to the Jamalpur police station, prompting police officials to rush to the scene.

The local police have initiated investigations into the incident. Efforts are underway to identify the deceased and those involved in the assault.

The shocking event raises questions over the effectiveness of the recent criminal law amendments aimed at curbing such acts of violence.
