NEW DELHI — The Chairman of Delhi Minorities Commission, Zakir Khan, is in the eye of a storm after a member of the Muslim Advisory Committee in the commission leveled serious allegations of mismanagement and financial irregularities against him.
In a statement issued on Friday, Tabassum Akbar has raised serious concerns over Chairman Khan’s attempts to mislead the public, in public awareness programmes, by promoting government schemes without providing any substantial benefits to the applicants.
Chairman Khan, alleged Akbar, encourages people to take advantage of different government schemes, promising them full support of the commission. “However, as of now, none of the applicants have reportedly received any benefits, whether in terms of fee refund or education and employment loans,” Akbar said.
When questioned about this, the chairman reportedly deflected responsibility, stating that the finance department and the applicants determine the outcome of loan applications.
Social worker Hasnain Akhtar Mansoori, accused Chairman Khan of organising public awareness programs at various locations and offering cash incentives ranging from five to eight thousand rupees to program organisers. Mansoori revealed that, through an RTI inquiry, it was discovered that an awareness program conducted under the commission’s banner had incurred bills exceeding 20,000 rupees. He decried this as an act of deception and dishonesty that warrants investigation.
