NEW DELHI — A Muslim teacher at a school in Hathras district has been dismissed from service for failing to extend reciprocal greetings of ‘Ram Ram’ by a Class XI student of the school.

The action against Mohammed Adnan, a teacher at Saiema Mansoor Public School, was taken last week as he reportedly reprimanded the student and refused to accept his greetings.

The incident quickly snowballed into a community-wide uproar. Right-wing groups protested outside the school demanding the dismissal of the teacher, reports reaching here on Monday said.

The protestors recited Hanuman Chalisa, a Hindu hymn. As the right-wingers mounted pressure on the school management and refused to leave the premises unless strict action was taken against the teacher the principal ordered Adnan’s dismissal.

The principal also issued an apology on his behalf, promising measures to prevent such incidents in the future.

“Children from both communities have studied in our school for the last 30 years, and we never faced such an accusation before. However, we have removed Mohammad Adnan from duty, and the administration has formed a committee to probe the matter,” Principal Salman Kidwai was quoted as saying.

Hathras District Magistrate Archana Verma on Saturday formed an inquiry committee to investigate the matter. The committee includes an SDM and a district basic education officer.
