ALIGARH – A video clip has emerged on social media, which showed Aligarh police going door-to-door to ask people whether their family members were participating in the anti-CAA protests. The police probe raised protests, as this is seen as an attempt to silence and intimidate the peaceful protesters.

The video carried the logo of the pro-government channel Republic TV. A team of cops was seen knocking on doors and asking such questions to the families. US-based human rights activist Arjun Sethi has shared the video.

Stated he, “Another disturbing video out of India, this time from Aligarh. Police are showing up at the homes of peaceful protesters seeking to intimidate & silence them. Sending strength to everyone speaking truth to power in India.”

However, Republic TV termed the police action as “door-to-door campaign” by the Aligarh police.

Bollywood actor Ali Fazal also took note of the video and slammed the police action. “What the hell is this,” Ali commented about the video.

Aligarh had witnessed a massive police crackdown on anti-CAA protesters. The cops have launched brutal attacks even inside Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) campus. Since Uttar Pradesh joined the nationwide protests against CAA, NRC and NPR, the Yogi Adityanath government went all out to crush the movement. The UP police killed at least 23 Muslims and arrested thousands including prominent human rights activists Mohd Shoaib and SR Darapuri as also political activist Sadaf Zafar.

The UP government recently faced another controversy vis-a-vis its treatment of protesters, when the government put up hoardings with personal details and photos of anti-CAA protesters at an intersection in Lucknow. The Allahabad high court took suo motu cognizance of the government’s objectionable action and ordered removal of the posters with the immediate effect.
