NEW DELHI — The Supreme Court on Monday flagged a piece of news circulating on social media and messenger apps falsely attributing a quote to Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud.
The post doing the rounds on social media with a file photograph of the Chief Justice and falsely quoting him to provoke the public to unite and come out on the streets to fight for their rights against the ‘dictatorial government,’ media reports said.
“The post is fake, ill-intended and mischievous. No such post has been issued by the Chief Justice of India nor has he authorised any such post,” said the press note issued by the Public Relations Office (PRO) of the apex court.
The court said action was being taken by the law enforcement authorities.
“Appropriate action is being taken in this regard with the law enforcement authorities,” the PRO’s press note said.
The post’s caption said: “Indian democracy Supreme Court Zindabad” alongside an alleged quote by the CJI. The quote citing the CJI read: “We are trying our best to save the Constitution of India, the democracy of India. But your cooperation is also very important for this, all the people should unite and come out on the streets and ask the government for their rights, this dictatorial government will scare people, and threaten, but you don’t have to be afraid, keep courage and ask the government to account, I am with you.”
