NEW DELHI — Two Hindu youth allegedly raised ‘Jai Shri Ram’ slogan in Hyderabad’s historic Makkah Masjid on Thursday and were immediately subdued by the mosque’s security personnel who then escorted them to the nearby Hussaini Alam police station. The local police reportedly detained the duo promptly.

Amul and Smith, said to be from Maharashtra and Karnataka respectively, had come to the mosque with another companion. After entering the premises of the mosque, they shouted ‘Jai Shri Ram’, according to reports reaching here on Friday.

However, the episode’s other version is that the youth did not shout the slogan but the ringtone of one’s phone was that of Jai Shri Ram.

A source close to Hyderabad Police maintains that the cops believe the Hindu slogan was, in fact, raised. He pointed out that in a busy and noisy area where the mosque stands, it was difficult for a mere ringtone to be as loud as someone raising slogans.

Further details are awaited as the police are investigating the whole matter.

This is the first time that such an incident has taken place in the mosque, the largest one in the city.

Given that the incident transpired a day before Friday (when hundreds of Muslims congregate for the noon prayers), the cops have sounded high alert in the area.
