MYSURU — Campaigning in the Varuna constituency in Karnataka turned violent after the Congress and BJP workers clashed with each other in the Siddaramanahundi village..

Workers of the BJP alleged that they were beaten and roughed up by supporters of Mr Siddaramaiah when they went to campaign at Siddaramanahundi, and were told not to enter the village.

Incidentally, Siddaramanahundi is the native village of Mr Siddaramaiah.

Former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is pitted against Housing Minister V. Somanna of the BJP in what is reckoned to be a high-stakes battle.

Meanwhile, Somanna and MP from Mysuru-Kodagu seat, Pratap Simha visited the injured party worker, Nagesh, on Friday, who has been hospitalised in Mysuru. They reportedly warned Siddaramaiah of consequences if he encouraged highhandedness of his party workers.

Somanna told the mediapersons that the BJP workers are being threatened in the Varuna constituency. “I will complain about all this to the Election Commission,” he added.

BJP allege that there is desperation and meanness in Siddaramaiah’s camp. “They are fearing defeat and indulging in hurling abuses and creating nuisance wherever Somanna goes to seek votes,” Pratap Simha stated. (With agency inputs)
