NEW DELHI — Maulana Arshad Madani, President Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind, has decided to challenge the death sentence issued to Mufti Waliullah by Ghaziabad District Sessions Judge Jitendra Kumar Sinha in a 2006 case of serial blasts at Sankat Mochan temple. Waliullah was the lone accused in the case.

Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind has been providing legal aid to Waliullah who belongs to Phulpur, Uttar Pradesh. In his reaction to the court verdict, Maulana Madani said they will challenge the decision of the lower court in the high court with a hope to get full justice in the case.

Citing the examples where high courts overturned the verdicts of lower courts, he said the 2002 Akshardham temple attack verdict is a case in point. The lower court sentenced three people including Mufti Abdul Qayyum to death while four others were given life imprisonment which was upheld by the Gujarat High Court. However, when the matter reached the Supreme Court, all the accused were not only acquitted.

What’s more, the apex court reprimanded the Gujarat Police for plotting to falsely implicate innocent people in the bomb blasts. “Hence,” he said, “We hope that if Allah wills, we will succeed in this case as we have succeeded in other cases.
