NEW DELHI – Farmers protest has returned to Delhi as thousands of farmers have gathered at Ramlila Ground to demand a legal guarantee on minimum support price (MSP) and fulfilment of their other demands.

‘Kisan Mahapanchayat’ spearheaded by Samyukt Kisan Morcha began in Delhi on Monday morning amid tight security. A heavy contingent of police has been deployed at Delhi’s Ramlila ground to ensure that the event goes peacefully and law and order is maintained.

Traffic has also been diverted accordingly from the roads leading to Ramlila Ground.

“The Kisan Mahapanchayat is being held to press for legal guarantee on the minimum support price (MSP),” the Samyukt Kisan Morcha, an umbrella body of farmer unions, said in a statement on Sunday.

The farmers body has also urged the Centre to dissolve the committee on MSP, alleging that it was contrary to their demands.

Morcha leader Darshan Pal reportedly said “the Centre must fulfil the assurances it gave to us in writing on December 9, 2021, and also take effective steps to mitigate the ever-increasing crisis faced by farmers.”

A 14-member delegation of the Morcha is also scheduled to meet union agriculture minister Narendra Singh Tomar to put forth their demands.

The Kisan Morcha spearheaded an over a year-long agitation, in and around National Capital against the Centre’s now-repealed farm laws, which was suspended in December 2021 following a government assurance to consider the farmers’ pending demands, including the withdrawal of cases lodged against farmers during the agitation and a legal guarantee for MSP.
