NEW DELHI – Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) authorities have initiated a probe against one of its students who allegedly raised “religious slogans” during the Republic Day celebrations on the campus on Thursday.

The action is based on a viral video on social media showing the student in the National Cadet Corps uniform raising “religious slogans” at the Republic Day celebrations outside Strachey Hall on the university campus.

University Proctor Prof. Wasim Ali said: “An order has been issued by the university administration to investigate the matter. A three-member committee has also been set up by the Vice-Chancellor to look into the entire issue.”

Final action, he said, will be taken based on the report submitted by the committee, he said.

“The student, a native of Malda, West Bengal, has been temporarily suspended by the university,” Prof. Wasim told Clarion India

“If any religious slogans were raised, they were not befitting the occasion that is Republic Day. It was not a religious occasion, it was a national festival,” he said.

The student is also a cadet of the National Cadet Corps, AMU unit.

“We don’t have any information on this, the administration is looking into the case. We will follow the action taken by the administration,” Prof. Major Fareed Mahdi, Liaison Officer of NCC, told Clarion India.

“Let the committee members do their investigation and then their decision will be followed,” he said.

However, students on the campus claimed that a part of the video was deliberately being used on social media against the institution.

They said that the entire video included other slogans such as ‘Vande Mataram’ and ‘AMU zindabad’. They also claimed that the slogans were raised after the Republic Day event was over. “This event was separate from the Republic Day function,” they asserted.

No clarification has been given by the student so far.

Aligarh Additional Superintendent of Police, Kuldeep Singh Gunawat, said the university administration has been informed and directed to take cognizance of the matter.
