BENGALURU — Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Saturday said that the state government is “very seriously” mulling the implementation of a Uniform Civil Code as “it was part of the main manifesto of the BJP at the national level.”
While addressing party workers in the Shivamogga district, he said that the state must have it.
According to NDTV report Bommai said, “We are thinking very seriously about one of the main manifesto points of BJP on the all India level, that is the Uniform Civil Code. There are committees being formed in different states regarding this. Even we are looking into it and studying its aspects. We feel it is important to implement it.”
The CM said the preamble of the constitution speaks of equality and fraternity. Reaffirming his commitment to implement the UCC, he said, “.. we have been talking about Uniform Civil Code from the time of Deendayal Upadhyay. There is a serious thought going on at the country and state level. There is also an intention to implement it when the right time comes,” reports PTI.
“I would like to say very clearly that we not only expound things we believe in that can make people’s welfare possible and bring equality, but also we will take all strong measures to implement it,” he explained, according to the report.
On the anti-conversion law, Bommai had said many people called it anti-constitutional, but now the Supreme Court has passed an order saying forced conversion is a crime.
On probe into the voters’ list revision controversy, Mr Bommai said that the investigation will be carried out in an impartial manner and any officer, or organisation, or agency found guilty will be punished.
“Several persons are already arrested in this connection and the inquiry of officials is on. The Election Commission of India has decided to revise the voters’ list where deletion of names has occurred, and the government will welcome it”, Bommai said.
Congress last week lodged a complaint with the Election Commission (EC) against the BJP in connection with the alleged voters’ list scam.
Congress President D.K. Shivakumar and Opposition leader Siddaramaiah had asked for review of deletion of 27 lakh voters from the voters’ list. They have alleged that voters’ data has been stolen by the ruling BJP to suit its advantage. The BJP, wherever it is finding it difficult to win, is using private agencies to steal the data of voters.
Chief Minister Bommai, however, charged that the Congress is doing all this as it fears losing duplicate votes. There is no evidence for allegations made by the Congress.
