NEW DELHI – The Uttar Pradesh Police, on Sunday, filed a case of “disturbing peace” against Madhu Kishwar, a far-right activist, along with four others, after they posted an old video of an incident that took place in 2017 which is sensitive in nature.

The video shows how Hindu devotees were booked for deliberately mowing a Muslim man by their vehicle in the Deoband town of western Uttar Pradesh. It has been shared now with a sinister motive to mislead the viewers about the incident purported to be of recent origin to project Hindus as being victimised.

The case filed by the police in the Saharanpur district names those who shared the video while clarifying that it was misleading about the incident that took place in 2017.

The police urged the users to delete the posts. The case registered in Deoband Police Station invokes Section 505(2) of the Indian Penal Code (publishing or circulating a rumour with intent to incite a class or community), and Section 66(D) of the Information Technology Act.

Kishwar, an academic, is known for her anti-Muslim rhetoric and peddling conspiracy theories against the community. She is also an ardent supporter of the Hindu nationalist BJP Government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She is currently chair of the Indian Council of Social Science Research.
