NEW DELHI – Eight people, who were arrested for reportedly offering Namaz at a weekly market in Haridwar, Uttarakhand, were later released on bail by the sub-divisional magistrate’s (SDM) court, the police said. According to reports, they were all vendors who used to sell vegetables in the local market that falls under the Ranipur police station limits.

All the eight men were charged under Section 151 of the Criminal Procedure Code (designed to commit any cognisable offence) and produced before the SDM’s court. The court gave them a warning before granting them bail, Superintendent of Police (City) Swatantra Kumar said, reports PTI.

The eight men identified as Nizam (22), Nasim (52), Sajjad Ahmad (50), Mursalin (38), Ashraf (45), Asgar (37), Mustafa (35) and Ikram (47) were arrested after a few locals complained to the police that they were offering namaz in public at the weekly market in Shivalik Nagar colony on Thursday evening, according to Police.

Reacting to the incident, Qazi Muhammad Nizamuddin, an office-bearer of the All India Congress Committee, Manglaur constituency, said that arresting the Muslims for just offering namaz is unjust, reports The Hindu.

“The BJP has nothing to do except playing dirty politics. They did the same thing at the Lulu Mall in Lucknow. Everyone knows that the BJP lost the majority of seats in Haridwar in the recent Assembly election. This is the constituency they cannot afford to lose once again. This is why they are taking recourse to all tactics to divert public attention from real issues and create communal disharmony,” he added.
