NEW DELHI — Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg broke her silence on the arrest of Disha Ravi, an Indian climate activist, as she took to express her support.
“Freedom of speech and the right to peaceful protest and assembly are non-negotiable human rights. These must be a fundamental part of any democracy,” Thunberg said, quoting the tweet thread posted by ‘Fridays for Future India’, a pro-environment group of which Disha is a member.

FFF India said in the tweet thread that Disha has been voicing environmental concerns and striving for equality and representation of most affected and marginalised sections of the country.

Disha was arrested in a raid by a team of Delhi Police at her home in Bengaluru last week in a case of sedition.
She was sent to police custody, initially for five days and later extended by three more days, by a magisterial order which drew flak from legal experts for being issued in haste.
On Friday, the Delhi High Court urged the media to avoid sensationalising Disha’s case after she filed a petition against three TV stations for playing out her Whatsapp chats believed to be leaked by Delhi Police, an accusation they deny.
Disha’s arrest has sparked massive outrage with critics saying that the government was going even after young activists to silence dissent.
