KANPUR – Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad was detained by the police on Monday while he was on his way to the Regency hospital to meet the Unnao’s surviving Dalit girl, who is undergoing treatment there.

The three Dalit girls, two sisters and their cousin, aged 13, 16 and 17, were found abandoned in a desolated place in Baburhao village which falls in Asoha police limits. They had left home in search of animal fodder on Wednesday afternoon.

When they did not return home even after sunset, the families went out to look for them. Brother of one of the victims said their hands and feet were tied and they were unconscious.

The girls were taken to a local hospital where the younger two were died. The eldest one was referred to a hospital in Kanpur city.

A number of people including Dalit leader and Bhim Army chief Chandra Shekhar Azad had demanded that the girl should be taken to Delhi for better treatment. But she is still undergoing treatment in a Kanpur hospital.

Bhim Army supporters created a ruckus and staged a demonstration, demanding the immediate release of Azad who was reportedly detained in apprehension of breach of peace.

Earlier, Azad met the family members of the two girls who died due to poisoning on February 17. He met the family members at a roadside eatery on the outskirts of the village, giving a slip to the police.

Azad had earlier warned that he would go to Unnao if the government did not shift the third girl to Delhi for advanced treatment.
