The votes bagged by BSP or NCP at least on 9 seats helped the BJP candidates take the winning lead over Congress candidates

AHMEDABAD — In the recently-concluded tight Assembly contest, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was able to retain power sixth time in a row. But unlike the previous five state elections, the saffron party narrowly crossed the magic figure of 92 in the 182-member Assembly this time, and for this it should thank Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) also.
The BJP won 99 seats, first time below 100 in the last 22 years, and just 7 seats more than the simple majority mark. But at least on 9 of these seats, the votes bagged by BSP or NCP helped the BJP candidates take the winning lead over Congress candidates. Overall, Congress won 77 seats and its allies 3 seats. The performance of Congress was its best since 1995 elections.
BSP, which has strong base in India’s largest state Uttar Pradesh and has ruled it several times in the past, contested the Gujarat Assembly elections but without any success. However, at least on 5 seats it affected the result.
Similarly, NCP, which was able to win 1 seat, also affected the outcome in favor of BJP on 4 seats.
