NEW DELHI — Jailed Assam leader and anti-CAA activist Akhil Gogoi alleged physical and mental torture in custody in a letter from jail on Tuesday and claimed he was offered instant bail by NIA interrogators if he joined either the RSS or the BJP, reports PTI.

The letter released by Gogoi’s newly floated political outfit Raijor Dal said the peasant leader was taken to Delhi on December 18, 2019, without the court’s permission.

“At the NIA headquarter, I was lodged in lockup No 1 and was given only one dirty blanket. I slept on the floor in 3-4 degree celsius of temperature,” he claimed.

During interrogation, the NIA officials offered him instant bail if he joined the RSS or the BJP, the letter claimed.

“They said I could contest the Assembly polls against a vacant seat and become a minister,” Gogoi claimed.

“Because of my refusals, several cases were heaped on me and I even failed to get bail from the Supreme Court. Now it seems all chances of getting out are lost. My family is almost finished, and I am physically destroyed,” said Gogoi who is under arrest since December 2019 for his role in the violent anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protests.

The Assam activist alleged he was offered Rs 20 crore to start an NGO by leaving the peasant body, Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS), and work against conversion of Assamese people into Christianity.

“When I did not accept any of their proposals, they offered me a meeting with the CM and an influential Assam minister. I turned down that too,” Gogoi said, according to the report.

The agency, however, refuted the allegation levelled by Assam activist.

“I am spending extreme mental and physical trauma in jail during this period. Don’t know what my future holds but understood that the future of Assam and its people is dark under BJP rule,” Gogoi said in the letter.

Gogoi is contesting Assam Assembly election from the Sibsagar constituency from jail.
