NEW DELHI — Two senior Supreme Court judges have asked the Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra to call a “full court” to discuss the “future” of the Supreme Court.

In a brief two-sentence letter sent on Sunday, Justices Ranjan Gogoi and Madan Lokur demanded that the CJI call a “full court” to discuss “institutional issues” and the “future” of the court, according to The Indian Express report.

A full court is when all Supreme Court judges are present for a subject of public importance relating to the judiciary. It is usually called by the Chief Justice.

The letter is sent two days after opposition parties submitted notice to impeach the top judge. The opposition parties, led by the Congress, initiated the unprecedented step to impeach the CJI by moving the notice levelling charges against him.

The impeachment notice was, however, rejected by Vice President of India Venkaiah Naidu.

The Chief Justice, Dipak Misra, has yet to respond to the letter, according to sources.

Responding to the letter, a senior judge said: “It is a very sad situation. We are sick of it. Nobody is worried about what is going on in the Supreme Court,” according to NDTV.

Justices Ranjan Gogoi and Madan Lokur, both are members of the Supreme Court collegium or group of most senior judges. Justice Gogoi is expected to take over as the next Chief Justice.
