NEW DELHI: Former Union Minister Yashwant Sinha has strongly opposed the BJP-propelled idea of simultaneous polls for all Assemblies and Lok Sabha, saying this would lead to “elected dictatorship”.

“Simultaneous assembly and Lok Sabha polls in our parliamentary democracy is the surest guarantee of elected dictatorship,” tweeted Sinha, who recently left BJP over the policies of the BJP government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

He further said the idea of one nation and poll is impractical.

“One nation one poll is nothing but a slogan. It is completely impractical in a parliamentary democracy,” tweeted Sinha on Sunday.

Several political parties have opposed PM Modi’s idea of simultaneous polls.

In the recent consultations with the Law Commission of India, which is collecting opinions of political parties on the subject, at least nine parties have opposed the idea. They include Dravida Munnetra Kazagham (DMK), Janata Dal (Secular), and Aam Admi party (AAP), The Telugu Desam Party (TDP), CPI-M, CPI, Trinamool Congress and All India Majlis-e Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM). Four parties including Samajwadi Party and TRS have supported the idea. However, the two largest parties – BJP and Congress – have so far stayed away from consultations with the Law Commission.
