CAIRO, Feb 5 – A court resumed Wednesday the trial of Egypt’s ousted Islamist president, Mohamed Morsi, along with 14 other Muslim Brotherhood members over charges of inciting attacks against protestors in December 2012.
Morsi and the 14 other defendants are accused of inciting violence outside the presidential palace and ordering the killing of opponents who protested a controversial constitutional declaration decreed by Morsi in November 2012 expanding his power, Xinhua reported citing state television.
The clashes left at least eight people dead.
Heavy security has been deployed outside the Police Academy here, where the hearing is taking place.
Islamists have staged regular protests demanding Morsi’s reinstatement calling his ouster a “coup” since the Egypt army overthrew him in July last year.
But they have been met with a heavy crackdown in which hundreds were killed and thousands arrested.
The government had declared the Muslim Brotherhood, from which Morsi hails, as a terrorist organisation last December. — IANS
