NEW DELHI — A Muslim auto driver in Uttar Pradesh’s Moradabad is winning accolades for his honest conduct in the face of great trial.

According to Times of India, last week Vikas Singh, a Delhi University professor, boarded the autorickshaw of Maruf at Moradabad railway station. Once he alighted at the bus stop of the town, he forgot his bag on the seat. Maruf noticed the bag when he was looking for another passenger.

He opened the bag in which he found a diary that carried the contact number of Singh. He immediately dialed the number and informed Singh about the missing bag. The bag contained jewellery worth around Rs 2.5 lakh, a laptop and other valuables, the report said.

By then Singh had already approached the police but when he spoke with Maruf on the call, he heaved a sigh of relief. The two met again at Galshaheed police station where Maruf handed over the bag to Singh

The SHO of the police station Mohit Chaudhary said Singh was headed to Amroha to drop his wife.

“By the time the passenger reached the police station, the auto-rickshaw driver had contacted him,” he told TOI.

Maruf was rewarded Rs 1,000 for his kind and honest conduct as the SHO said that it was rare to see people returning the forgotten belongings and it would have been a challenge to trace him when the passenger had no identity details of the driver.
