Bakrid Prayers Banned at Kasmandi Fort-Mosque Site in Lucknow

Authorities tighten security after dispute intensifies between Muslim residents and Pasi groups over the site

LUCKNOW — The administration in Uttar Pradesh’s capital Lucknow has barred Eid Al-Adha prayers at a disputed site in the Kasmandi area amid rising tension between Muslim residents and members of the Pasi community over competing claims linked to the location.

Officials said the restriction was imposed as a precautionary measure to maintain law and order and prevent any communal tension before Bakrid. Heavy police deployment has been ordered across the area, while security agencies have intensified surveillance around the disputed site.

The controversy centres around a structure in Kasmandi which Muslims identify as a mosque where prayers have reportedly been offered in the past. However, members of the Pasi community claim that the site is historically linked to Raja Kans and describe it as an important fort connected to their cultural heritage.

Several organisations associated with the Pasi community have demanded that the place be officially protected as a historical and cultural site. They argue that the location represents an important part of their community’s identity and history.

With Bakrid approaching, local authorities feared that attempts to offer prayers at the site could trigger confrontation between the two sides. Senior police and district administration officials have therefore prohibited prayers at the disputed location for the festival period.

Police officials said no group would be allowed to take the law into its own hands and warned of strict action against anyone attempting to disturb peace.

The administration has held multiple rounds of meetings with representatives of both communities in an effort to prevent escalation. Despite these efforts, tension reportedly remained high in the locality in the days leading up to Eid Al-Adha.

Security arrangements in the area have been significantly increased. Police and Provincial Armed Constabulary personnel have been deployed in large numbers near the disputed structure and surrounding localities.

Barricades have also been installed near the site, while authorities are monitoring movement in and around the area. Officials said drones and CCTV cameras are being used to keep constant watch over sensitive points.

Police have additionally intensified social media monitoring to prevent rumours, inflammatory posts or provocative messages from spreading online.

Authorities appealed to residents to maintain calm and avoid paying attention to unverified information. Officials stated that ensuring peaceful Bakrid celebrations remains the administration’s top priority.

According to administrative sources, historical and legal aspects linked to the disputed site may also be examined in the future before any final decision is taken regarding ownership or religious status.

Police maintained that the situation is currently under control and said action would be taken against anyone attempting to create unrest or disturb communal harmony during the festival period.
