The incident in Harda sparks concern over safety and due process; the woman claims it was buffalo meat and meant for sale to support her daughter’s treatment
HARDA — A Muslim woman was stopped and questioned at the Harda railway station in Madhya Pradesh after some people suspected that she was carrying beef, leading to a tense situation and claims of harassment.
The incident took place at the railway station premises, where confusion and panic were reported as people gathered around the woman. According to available information, some individuals approached her based on a tip-off that beef was being brought to the station.
The woman, identified as Zahida from Khandwa district, was found carrying bags containing around 30 kilograms of meat. Before the police could intervene, she was stopped and questioned by the group, which led to a heated situation.
Passengers present at the station said the scene quickly turned tense. One eyewitness said, “People suddenly gathered and started questioning the woman. Some passengers got scared and moved away from the area.”
According to Zahida, the meat she was carrying was buffalo meat, not beef. She said she had brought it from Burhanpur after visiting a relative who had passed away.
Explaining her situation, Zahida said, “I needed money for my daughter’s treatment. That is why I brought the meat to sell. This is the first time I have done this.”
She also mentioned that another woman, identified as Rahat, was travelling with her. Zahida said Rahat fled the scene when the situation became tense and left her bag behind.
Zahida said, “When people started shouting and using harsh words, she got scared and ran away.”
Local reports suggest that the group acted before informing the police, which added to the confusion at the station. Police later reached the spot after receiving information about the situation.
A resident said, “Such matters should be handled by the police. When people take action on their own, it creates fear and disorder.”
After the incident, members of the group went to the city police station and demanded strict action. The situation remained tense for some time in the station area.
Officials have not yet confirmed whether the meat was from a cow or a buffalo. The woman has maintained that it was buffalo meat.
The incident has once again raised questions about how such situations are handled in public places, especially when individuals are stopped and questioned without official authority.
Residents say there is a need for calm handling of sensitive matters so that public spaces remain safe for everyone.
