Communalism at Peak as Delhi Rapido Driver Refuses Ride to Muslim Passenger

Date:

"Yes, Muslims are not allowed in my vehicle. My car, my choice,” said the cab driver

NEW DELHI — A Rapido driver in Delhi has allegedly refused to pick up a passenger after identifying him as Muslim, triggering outrage online and renewing concerns over discrimination in everyday services.

According to reports, the driver declined the ride despite a confirmed booking, allegedly telling the passenger: “Musalmaan allowed nahi hai meri gaadi mein” (Muslims are not allowed in my vehicle).

The incident took place on Saturday, March 21, coinciding with Eid.

The passenger, identified as Zain, a Kerala-based journalist currently living in New Delhi, had booked the ride through the Rapido app.

A video and audio recording of the exchange have since gone viral on social media. In the clip, the passenger is heard questioning the driver: “Why are you saying I am not allowed? Because I am a Muslim?” The driver allegedly responds, “Yes, Muslims are not allowed in my vehicle. My car, my choice.”

Following the backlash, Rapido issued a public apology, calling the driver’s behaviour “completely unacceptable.” The company said it takes such incidents seriously and has initiated a review.

“Your safety is our top priority, and we are committed to ensuring a respectful and secure experience for all our passengers,” the company said in a statement, adding that it would take appropriate action after completing its investigation.

The incident is the latest in a series of alleged cases highlighting concerns over religious discrimination, sparking a wider debate about inclusivity and safety in public-facing services.
