HYDERABAD – Police in Telangana’s Suryapet district have launched an investigation after a pig’s carcass was discovered inside an Eidgah in Basha Naik Tanda. Local Muslim leaders believe the act was a deliberate provocation during the holy month of Ramadan.

Md Inthiyaz, a 38-year-old businessman, filed a First Information Report (FIR) at the Suryapet Rural Police Station on Tuesday (3 March). In his complaint, Inthiyaz stated that he and two others found the dead pig inside the prayer ground around 10:30 am while cleaning the premises. He alleged that the carcass was placed there intentionally to incite religious hatred, a report in Siasat.com said on Thursday.

Sub-Inspector N Balu Naik registered a case under Sections 192 (provocation with intent to cause riot) and 325 (mischief by killing or maiming an animal) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The case is against unknown persons, and no arrests have been made yet.

Majlis Bachao Tehreek (MBT) spokesperson Amjed Ullah Khan strongly condemned the incident, calling it a deliberate attempt to hurt Muslim sentiments. Khan highlighted that the Eidgah is a walled prayer ground used by the local Muslim community. He criticised the police’s response, stating that despite nearly 24 hours passing, the culprits had not been identified or apprehended. Khan urged senior police officials to visit the site and ensure a thorough investigation, alleging that authorities often suppress such incidents rather than investigating them properly.

The MBT chief also claimed an increase in communal incidents in Telangana, citing 53 attacks on Muslims, mosques, or madrasas since Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy took office in December 2023. MBT has demanded the swift identification and arrest of those responsible for the Suryapet incident. Police have confirmed that the investigation is ongoing.
