No FIR registered so far; viral footage sparks questions over campus security and administrative response
MEERUT – A video circulating on social media has triggered controversy after it allegedly showed a Muslim student being chased and beaten during Holi celebrations at IIMT University in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut. The footage appears to show a young man in a white kurta being pursued by a group of students, struck repeatedly and having his kurta torn.
The incident, which reportedly took place inside the university campus, has led to serious questions about campus safety and the response of the administration. As of now, no FIR has been registered, according to sources.
Holi is widely seen as a festival of colours and togetherness. However, the alleged assault has cast a shadow over celebrations on campus. According to information shared by students, a group surrounded the Muslim student while colours were being played and began hitting him. He was reportedly chased across the campus as others followed.
One student, who requested anonymity, said, “He was running to save himself. A crowd was after him. His kurta was torn and he was hit several times.”
Students have alleged that no member of the university administration or security stepped in to stop the incident.
According to available information, no formal police complaint has yet been registered in connection with the incident. There has also been no public confirmation of an internal inquiry by the university.
A student claimed, “There is an attempt to downplay the matter. The student who was beaten belongs to a particular community. Instead of action, there is silence.”
Some students have raised concerns that earlier incidents of clashes among students at the university were also not handled firmly.
When contacted, Bhupendra Chaudhary, head of the legal cell at IIMT University, denied that any targeted assault had taken place.
He said, “The incident is being presented wrongly. During Holi celebrations, there was sudden chaos. Some students and security guards had a verbal argument. In that situation, there was a rush and confusion.”
He added, “Those students stay in the hostel. It was a case of panic during Holi, not a planned assault.”
When asked about the video showing a student being beaten, he responded, “The rush and pushing led to the scene. It is not correct to say that someone was targeted.”
However, several students say the explanation does not match what is visible in the footage.
The incident has led to debate over safety arrangements during festivals on campus. Some students said that proper supervision and crowd control could have prevented the situation.
A postgraduate student said, “If there was tension, security should have stepped in immediately. No student should feel unsafe during a festival.”
Others have called for an impartial investigation to establish the facts. “Let there be a fair inquiry. If nothing wrong happened, that will come out. If someone was assaulted, action must follow,” another student said.
As of now, the police have not issued a detailed public statement on the matter. It remains unclear whether a complaint will be filed by the student involved or by any other party.
The video continues to circulate, and pressure is building on the university administration to clarify its position with full transparency.
For many observers, the issue goes beyond one incident. They say it is about whether students of all communities can feel safe and respected on campus, especially during festivals that are meant to bring people together.
