NEW DELHI — A massive fire engulfed a Rohingya  camp of around 30 shanties in the Nuh area of Haryana on Wednesday night leaving around 100 refugees homeless. No loss of life or injury has been reported.

“We were busy with Isha namaz when we heard screams and people were running here and there,” said Jafarulla, a Rohigya refugee activist in Nuh.

Refugees said that the fire quickly tore through the camp leaving huts made of bamboo sticks and tarpaulin sheets to ashes in minutes as they waited for fire tenders which arrived around half hour after the fire started.

According to the Indian Express, authorities claimed to be  making arrangements for temporary accommodation for the displaced families. After the incident, the Superintendent of Police and Deputy Commissioner of Nuh reached the spot, the report said.

The cause of the fire is presumed to be a short circuit in electrical wiring inside a hut but an investigation has been opened to find more.

This is the second time the camp caught fire in the recent past. Rohingya camps often witness fire incidents. In June this year a fire ripped through the Rohingya camp in the national capital leaving 55 ramshackle shelters to ashes.

“We have documented more than 15 major fire incidents in Rohingya camps since 2012 across India where at least 4 people died,” said Ali Johar, a Rohingya activist.

He said apart from fire incidents, Rohingya camps face lack of access to adequate shelters, water lodging issues and fear of wild animals and snake bites.

The Rohingya Human Rights Initiative expressed anguish over the destruction caused by the fire and called on authorities and relief groups to provide shelter and support to the victims.

“In such heartfelt tragedies girls, women, children and even elderly people lose their dignity so we request the government of India, UNHCR and other NGOs to help them out from such heartfelt tragedy,” Sabber Kyaw Min, the founder of the group, said.
