Authorities investigate; some observers claim the act is a deliberate attempt to defame Muslim women and create unrest

MUMBAI – A video circulating widely on social media has stirred controversy in Mumbai, showing a man wearing a burqa entering a ladies’ compartment on a local train. The incident has raised questions about women’s safety and religious identity. Some commentators suggest it may be a plot to malign the Muslim community.

The alleged incident occurred near Ghatskopar railway station. According to reports, the man entered the ladies’ compartment while dressed in a burqa, making female passengers uncomfortable. The exact time of the occurrence is yet to be confirmed, but the video has sparked widespread discussion online.

In the video, a woman passenger can be heard saying, “A man wearing a burqa jumped into the ladies’ compartment. He boarded the train at Ghatskopar. We don’t know his intentions, and when we caught him in the act, he jumped off the train and escaped.” She urges other passengers to remain alert and mindful of their safety.

Some media reports claim that the man attempted inappropriate physical contact with female passengers. When questioned and recorded, he fled the train, jumping near the station and boarding a fast-moving train in the opposite direction.

Social media users have raised concerns about women’s safety in local trains, while others argue that the video is being used to defame Muslims. Both the Government Railway Police (GRP) and the Railway Protection Force (RPF) are jointly investigating the matter.

A spokesperson from the GRP said, “We are examining the footage and statements carefully. Safety of passengers is our priority, and anyone found guilty will be dealt with according to the law.”

For many residents, the episode highlights the delicate balance between ensuring women’s security and protecting religious identities, particularly in the context of viral social media content. As investigations continue, the authorities have urged caution against spreading unverified claims that could unfairly target communities.
