Row Over Lucknow’s KGMU Shrine Grows; Muslim Body Approaches Yogi

All India Mission Mohammadi says the centuries-old shrines stand on waqf land inside the medical university, and calls the notices unlawful

NEW DELHI/LUCKNOW – A fresh row has broken out at King George’s Medical University after notices were issued over shrines located inside the campus. Muslim groups say the step hurts religious rights and ignores the legal status of the land.

All India Mission Mohammadi (AIMM) has taken a strong stand and sought assistance from Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The organisation says the shrines are very old and deserve protection.

Syed Babar, General Secretary of AIMM, said the shrines were built long before the medical university came up. These mazars are around 500 to 600 years old. They are part of our history and faith,” he said.

AIMM says the entire KGMU campus stands on waqf land. On this basis, the group claims the university has no right to question or remove the shrines. “The land is waqf property. No officer can touch these places,” Syed Babar said.

After the notices were issued, an AIMM team met Vice Chancellor Dr Sonia Nityanand and submitted a memorandum. The group said it made its position clear during the meeting.

Syed Babar said the Vice Chancellor gave an assurance. “We were told the issue will be settled soon,” he said. “We hope the promise is kept.”

The AIMM leader also made sharp remarks against KGMU spokesperson KK Singh. He accused him of acting to please one section of society. “This is being done to satisfy right-wing voices. It targets Muslim symbols only,” Syed Babar alleged.

He warned against any move towards removal. “If the administration even looks at the shrines with bad intent, the outcome will be serious,” he said.

AIMM has said it will stay within the Constitution and the law. Syed Babar said legal steps are ready. “If needed, we will file an FIR against the Vice Chancellor and KK Singh,” he said. “If police refuse, we will go to court.”

The organisation has also appealed directly to the chief minister. “We ask CM Yogi to step in and give justice,” Syed Babar said. “This is not just about shrines. It is about equal rights for the Muslims.”

Muslim groups in Lucknow say the issue shows selective action and growing pressure on their religious sites. They say trust will suffer if old places of worship are questioned without legal care.

For now, all eyes are on the KGMU administration and the state government, as the Muslim community waits for a clear and fair decision.
