The left party demands that the Modi government abandon a ‘disgraceful position’ and take a categorical stand against US aggression
NEW DELHI — The Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Tuesday strongly criticised the Narendra Modi-led BJP government’s muted response to what it described as blatant US aggression against Venezuela, including the abduction of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife by US armed forces.
In a statement, the CPI(M) said the government’s position was “craven and unworthy of India’s long-held commitment to the defence of sovereignty and independence of nations.”
The party took particular exception to the statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), which merely expressed “deep concern at the developments in Venezuela” and called for “dialogue to ensure peace and stability in the region.”
“There is not a single word of condemnation in the MEA statement against the gross violation of the United Nations Charter and international law,” the CPI(M) said, noting that even some European allies of the United States had acknowledged the illegality of the actions.
Taking a jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat’s claim India being “Vishwa Guru”, the largest left party said India’s stance stood in sharp contrast to that of its BRICS partners such as Brazil and South Africa, which have unequivocally condemned the US actions and demanded the immediate release of President Maduro and his wife.
Accusing the Modi government of aligning itself with Washington, the CPI(M) said the position reflected the BJP’s right-wing ideological orientation and its strategic proximity to the Trump administration. “By adopting a pro-US stance, India has abdicated its claim to represent the interests of the Global South,” the statement said.
The CPI(M) demanded that the Modi government abandon what it termed a “disgraceful position” and take a categorical stand against US aggression and illegal actions in Venezuela.
