NEW DELHI — In a major development ahead of the ensuing assembly elections in West Bengal, the Congress received a major boost as Mausam Noor, a sitting Rajya Sabha MP from the Trinamool Congress, rejoined its ranks on Saturday.

Mausam Noor was inducted into the Congress by AICC General Secretary in charge of Communications Jairam Ramesh in the presence of Congress General Secretary in charge of West Bengal Ghulam Ahmed Mir, State Congress President Subhankar Sarkar, and Lok Sabha MP Isha Khan Chowdhury.

Speaking on the occasion, Jairam Ramesh welcomed Mausam Noor, the niece of veteran leader ABA Ghani Khan Chowdhury. He said it was a very happy occasion and that the political climate in West Bengal was changing.

Remembering the late ABA Ghani Khan Chowdhury, Jairam Ramesh said he was a pillar of the Congress party and that people still remember him with respect. He said he was happy that members of his family had united to strengthen the Congress. He added that the people of West Bengal want the Congress to become stronger, and the party will continue to strive to live up to those expectations.

Ghulam Ahmed Mir described it as a moment of great significance for the Congress and the youth of West Bengal. He said that Mausam Noor’s return to the Congress in the first week of 2026 was an auspicious sign for the party. He added that her roots and lineage are deeply connected to the Congress and that this would give new energy to the party across the state.

Mausam Noor, after joining the Congress, turned emotional and said it was an honour for her to return to her family, the Congress party. She said she had resigned from the Trinamool Congress and would formally submit her resignation from the Rajya Sabha on Monday.

Mausam Noor said she had taken the decision in consultation with her brother, Congress MP Isha Khan Chowdhury, to jointly strengthen the legacy and ideology of Ghani Khan Chowdhury. She said she wants to carry forward the Congress ideology of secularism, development and peace, which the people of Malda and West Bengal believe in.
