The parties call for withdrawal of American forces from the Caribbean Sea and urge that Latin America be declared a zone of peace
NEW DELHI — Left parties on Saturday strongly condemned the “blatant act of US imperialist aggression” against Venezuela and called on the Indian government to take a clear and principled position. They also urged the people across the country to protest the attack.
In a statement, the Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) said the bombing of multiple sites in Venezuela amounted to an open violation of the country’s sovereignty and was aimed at enforcing regime change in the Latin American nation.
The CPI(M) said that in recent weeks the United States had mobilised its military and naval forces around Venezuela as part of a broader strategy outlined in the US National Security Strategy 2025, announced in December last year. The party alleged that the growing concentration of US forces in the Western Hemisphere and Washington’s declared intent to dominate the region represented a renewed and more aggressive interpretation of the Monroe Doctrine.
The Monroe Doctrine, proclaimed by President James Monroe in 1823, was a foundational US foreign policy declaring the Western Hemisphere closed to new European colonisation and intervention, while the US would stay out of European affairs, establishing separate spheres of influence and positioning America as a regional power to protect newly independent Latin American nations from old-world interference.
Demanding an immediate end to what it termed US aggression, the CPI(M) called for the withdrawal of American forces from the Caribbean Sea and urged that Latin America be declared a zone of peace. It also appealed to the United Nations Security Council to pass a resolution condemning the attacks and to mount international pressure on the US to halt its military action.
The CPI(M) further called upon the people of India to join protests against the US offensive and demanded that Washington immediately disclose the whereabouts of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. It urged the Government of India to raise the issue internationally, seek proof of life, and uphold the principles of the UN Charter.
Meanwhile, the CPI (ML)-New Democracy also issued a strong condemnation of the US action, alleging that American forces had bombed civilian areas in Caracas and other cities after imposing a sea and air blockade on Venezuela. The party claimed that President Maduro and his wife had been captured and taken to the United States, describing the act as a grave violation of international law.
According to CPI (ML)-New Democracy, the US had been steadily building up military forces in the Caribbean for several months, including the deployment of the aircraft carrier USS Gerald Ford. The party alleged that more than 30 Venezuelan boats had been attacked, resulting in civilian casualties, and that two oil tankers had been seized by US forces.
The party accused Washington of seeking to install a pro-US regime in Venezuela and of attempting to gain control over the country’s vast oil reserves. It said President Donald Trump had been explicit about these ambitions, citing the National Security Strategy as evidence of what it termed a colonial approach to the resources of the Western Hemisphere.
Describing the US action as an attempt by a declining superpower to reassert global dominance, CPI (ML)-New Democracy said the attack was aimed at rolling back anti-imperialist forces in Latin America and sending a warning to other countries in the region.
Expressing solidarity with the people of Venezuela, the party said the attack would be resisted by Venezuelans and opposed by peace- and justice-loving people across the world. It called on progressive, democratic and anti-imperialist forces in India to organise protests against what it described as a gross violation of national sovereignty.
