The legislator expresses concern after videos emerged showing Kashmiri vendors being pushed and questioned in the state
NEW DELHI – The concern over the safety of Kashmiri workers in Himachal Pradesh grew on Thursday after a video showing the alleged harassment of Kashmiri vendors spread widely on social media. The video left many families in Kashmir worried about their loved ones working in the state.
Kupwara MLA Fayaz Mir took the matter seriously and met Himachal Pradesh Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla, urging him to take strong action and ensure that Kashmiri Muslims earning their livelihood are treated with dignity.
Mir said the video reflects the harsh reality faced by Kashmiris who leave their homes to work in other states. “Our people go out only to earn their daily bread. They should not be targeted like this,” he said.
The MLA added that the video had caused fear and anxiety among Kashmiri families. “Mothers, fathers and children back home are scared after seeing the clip. They keep asking whether their sons are safe,” he noted.
Mir informed that the governor listened to him carefully and promised action. “The governor told me he will talk to the director general of police and the deputy commissioner. He assured me the matter will be looked into,” Mir said after the meeting.
He also questioned why Kashmiris, especially Muslims, face repeated trouble and suspicion while working in different parts of India. “Why are our boys labelled again and again? They are simple workers. They are not criminals. This must stop,” Mir said.
He appealed to both Governor Shukla and Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu to ensure that Kashmiri Muslims working in Himachal are safe and treated with respect.
Mir stressed that the Himachal administration must act quickly so that such incidents do not happen again. “These workers deserve a fair and safe place to work. It is the duty of the state to protect them,” he said.
Kashmiri families, traders and community leaders have welcomed Mir’s intervention, saying they hope the government will take firm steps. Many expressed concern that in several states, Kashmiri Muslims continue to face suspicion and are often singled out without any reason.
The MLA said he will continue to follow up the matter until proper action is taken. “I want every Kashmiri worker to know that they are not alone. We will stand with them,” he added.
