Delhi Blast: Tablighi Jamaat Members Quizzed Over Links with Dr Umar Nabi

Date:

After thorough questioning, all Jamaat members were released, a senior police official said adding there is currently no evidence linking the community to the blast

NEW DELHI – Following the shocking Red Fort blast, police have detained several Tablighi Jamaat members from the Faiz Ilahi Mosque on Asaf Ali Road for questioning. The mosque had reportedly housed the alleged suicide bomber, Dr Umar Nabi, prompting investigators to examine whether any Jamaat members had knowledge of the attack.

“After thorough questioning, all Jamaat members were released,” a senior police official said. “The detentions were precautionary, and there is currently no evidence linking the community to the blast.”

Authorities have asked mosque management committees to provide visitor records, ensuring that any suspicious activity can be tracked. Meanwhile, the Delhi Police Special Cell has filed a new FIR to investigate the conspiracy angle of the attack.

The main investigation is now being handled by the National Investigation Agency (NIA). Overnight raids were conducted in the Dhauj and Nuh areas of Haryana, and other regions near the national capital, as agencies sought to trace any connections with the suspected bomber.

Three doctors from Al-Falah University in Haryana’s Faridabad were also reportedly detained during the operations. Two of them, identified as Mohammad and Mustaqeem, were taken into custody from Nuh. Police sources say both were in contact with Dr Muzammil, another figure under investigation.

Currently, Mohammad and Mustaqeem are being interrogated to determine if they had any involvement in arranging explosive materials. “We are following every lead, but it’s important to note that contacts alone do not imply criminal activity,” an NIA official said.

Meanwhile, in Palwal, Haryana, police have been visiting mosques and questioning imams. One imam told a local Urdu newspaper, “Police asked if anyone from Kashmir or other states had come to our mosque. They also requested that we keep records of all visitors staying for prayers.”

Leaders of the Tablighi Jamaat emphasised that the organisation’s activities are strictly religious. “Our focus is on preaching Islam, guiding people in prayer, and encouraging fasting. We have no involvement in politics or violence,” said Adnan Qureshi, District President of the All India Jamiat-e-Quresh.

The Red Fort blast investigation remains ongoing, with authorities urging vigilance while assuring the Muslim community that peaceful religious practice will not be criminalised.
