Shabana Azmi Hails Zohran Mamdani’s Historic Win

Date:

NEW DELHI — As Mamdani, a 34-year-old democratic socialist, secured a decisive victory over his main rivals, former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa, reactions and congratulatory messages started pouring in.

Observers note that his campaign focused on social justice and a more inclusive approach to city governance. His election is widely seen as a turning point in New York’s political history, with many looking to see how his administration will shape the city’s future.

Reactions to Mamdani’s victory came swiftly from prominent figures in the arts and political spheres. Veteran actor and a respected figure in India’s cultural landscape, Shabana Azmi expressed her delight on Facebook, writing, “Zohraan Mamdani wins !!!! I am over the moon! Not only because Zohraan is Mira and Mahmoud’s son, but because of who Zohraan is and the hope he represents for social justice.”

Shabana Azmi praised Zohran Mamdani on his landmark electoral victory, describing it as “a triumph for social justice and inclusivity”.

Azmi also commented on the challenges Mamdani’s campaign faced and blamed US President Donald Trump for “negative publicity” of Mamdani’s campaign. Her note added, “I have been watching his campaign closely .. inspite of all the negative publicity that was manufactured against him with Trump even pathetically saying that ‘I am better looking than him!’ Zohraan is young and promising. ‘Politics is not something that is done to us, politics is something we do for ourselves. A bold vision of what we can achieve not excuses for what hasn’t been done!’ More power to you.”

Zoya Akhtar, Filmmaker, also congratulated Mamdani on his landmark win. She posted, “Zohran Mamdani has officially won the NYC mayoral race at 34 years old,” highlighting his youth and achievement. Mamdani’s mother, Mira Nair, added her own words of pride: “Zohran you beauty.”

Zohran Mamdani has become the first Muslim — and one of the youngest individuals — to win the mayoral race in New York City, marking a significant milestone in the city’s political history.

Mamdani’s win is being seen as a symbolic breakthrough for the Indian-origin and Muslim communities in US urban politics, writes NDTV.

It also reflects a generational change. A younger leader, with a social justice agenda, capturing a major city leadership post underscores the role of diverse narratives in politics: Mamdani’s campaign leveraged inclusive messaging and identity in ways that resonated with many voters.

Mamdani is scheduled to assume office on January 1, 2026.
