3.9 Lakh Indians Gave Up Citizenship in 3 Years: Govt

NEW DELHI – In the last three years, 3,92,643 Indians renounced Indian citizenship, the government informed Parliament on Tuesday. Of these, 1, 63,370 lakh quit Indian citizenship in 2021 alone, the highest since 2019, Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai told the  Lok Sabha.

The minister, while answering a question from Bahujan Samaj Party (BJP) leader Haji Fazlur Rehman, said that 2019 saw as many as 1,44,017 Indians renouncing their citizenship for 103 countries, while in 2020 the number was 85,256.

He stated that in the year 2021, the highest number of 78,284 Indians got citizenship of the United States among those who gave up their citizenship of India. After the US, it’s Australia which accounted for the second highest number of Indians, 23,533, getting citizenships. Similarly, 21,597 Indians have taken citizenship of Canada and 14,637 Indians have taken UK citizenship.

According to government data, between 2019 and 2021, 1,70,795 Indians were given citizenship by the US – 61,683 in the year 2019, 30,828 in the year 2020 and 78,284 in the year 2021.

The data further revealed that in  the last three years, 58,391 Indians got Australian citizenship followed by Canada which granted   64,071 Indians citizenship. 35,435 Indians in Britain, 6,690 in Germany, 12,131 in Italy, and 8,882 in New Zealand have taken citizenship.

China also granted citizenship to more than 1,400 Indians while 48 persons renounced their citizenship for Pakistanis.
Responding to Rehman’s query,  Rai gave information citing the details provided by the Ministry of External Affairs regarding the number of Indians who have left the citizenship of India.

Rai attributed the phenomenon of Indians giving up citizenship to personal reasons.

In the year 2021, the highest number of 78,284 Indians got citizenship of the United States among those who gave up their citizenship of India.
