16 FIRs Against Syeda Hameed Over Her ‘Anti-Assamese, Divisive’ Remarks

Date:

The FIRs were filed by the Assam Jatiya Parishad against the activist over her remarks made during a visit to Guwahati last week

NEW DELHI – Noted activist and former Planning Commission member Syeda Saiyidain Hameed is facing 16 FIRs in different districts of Assam over her recent “anti-Assamese and divisive” remarks.

The FIRs were filed by the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) against her on Friday over her remarks made during a visit to Guwahati last week (August 24), media reports said on Saturday. The activist reportedly questioned the state’s deportation drive targeting Bengali-speaking Muslims. “What is wrong if they are Bangladeshis? Bangladeshis are also humans. Earth is so large, Bangladeshis can live in Assam”, she reportedly said defending the presence of illegal immigrants in the state.

A day later, the activist alleged in New Delhi that Assam is a “dangerous place” and criticised the Assamese community for playing a destructive role.

The AJP had earlier claimed that Hameed’s remarks echoed the “propaganda script” of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s family-owned media network, pointing to her reported “close association” with a journalist employed there.

According to AJP leaders, the FIRs were registered in police stations across Guwahati city and other districts of the state, demanding Hameed’s immediate arrest for allegedly attempting to disrupt communal harmony in the state.

The AJP has urged the police to act under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including section 195 (offences against public peace), 353 (statements intended to cause public mischief), and 356 (defamation), along with other applicable provisions.
